WSR Recycling ‘Bulks Up’ Waste Management for Warrington

WSR Recycling ‘Bulks Up’ Waste Management for Warrington

Cheshire-based WSR Recycling has been awarded a two year contract by UPM to provide ‘bulking-up’ services as part of a new waste management contract for Warrington Borough Council. WSR Recycling succeeded with the tender based on its ability to partner with larger recycling and recovery facilities, its locality to Warrington and reliable service provision.

From the end of December, Warrington Borough Council will deliver all waste collected from residents’ blue bins (co-mingled) to WSR Recycling in Widnes. WSR Recycling will then ‘bulk-up’ the waste, which means the contents from four trucks will be processed and consolidated into a single vehicle – before being transported onwards to UPM’s Materials Recovery & Recycling Facility (MRRF) at the UPM Shotton paper mill in Deeside 30 miles away.

Mark Trousdale, Managing Director, WSR Recycling, explains: “UPM were able to offer Warrington Borough Council an integrated recycling approach with extremely high recovery rates. However, with the facility approximately 30 miles away, there were some logistical considerations. By partnering with us as a local provider of waste management and processing services, we have been able to develop a system whereby the volume of waste that can be recycled is maximised – whilst minimising carbon footprint.”

Handling up to 17,000 tonnes of co-mingled waste from Warrington each year, WSR Recycling had to demonstrate a flexible and scalable approach, which was best illustrated by the company’s recent investment in the expansion of facilities and a commitment to continue this through 2012 and beyond. Already providing this ‘bulking-up’ service to Sita for the three Liverpool Universities, WSR Recycling has highly developed effective and efficient processes for partnerships of this nature.

The UPM MRRF is a brand new facility and achieves some of the best recovery rates in the UK. 80 per cent of recyclables will travel only a few miles from the Shotton facility to be reprocessed into new products and 99 per cent of the materials stay in the UK.

Cllr David Keane, executive board member for environment and public protection, said: “This new contract will improve the service provided to residents by allowing them to recycle even more than ever through our blue bin scheme. Not only will the council save money through this new contract but we will also be paid more for the recyclables that we collect. All money earned will be reinvested into local services. So by recycling more, you are helping support your town while doing your bit for the environment at the same time!”

Mike Burgess, National Sourcing Manager for UPM said: “We’re delighted to be able to work with Warrington and its partners. Our integrated recycling approach ensures that not only can we recover recyclable materials at a very high rate but we also recycle material on our own site. UPM Shotton has been called a benchmark for sustainable manufacturing, with reduced CO2 emissions and a focus on minimising waste. We are proud of our long term partnerships with local authorities.”

Mark Trousdale, Managing Director, WSR Recycling, concluded: “We are very much looking forward to providing the bulking up facility for Warrington, prior to the co-mingled waste being transported to UPM Shotton. Following significant investment in our own facilities, we will be able to provide a highly efficient service that will help maximise the recovery and recycling rates of this operation. Importantly for Warrington, our site provides a local processing point before the sorted waste is transported to Deeside.”

Meeting the waste management needs for public and private sector clients’ hazardous and non hazardous waste streams, WSR Recycling provides a competitive and highly professional service. For further information please visit www.wsrrecycling.co.uk or call 0151 423 5928.
